If you missed the last edition, our August 2026 social media updates cover July and early August.

What are the three biggest social media updates this fall?

Meta One's paid links, TikTok's in-app checkout, and ChatGPT's expanding ad formats. All three pull the click, the question, and the purchase inside the platform, and two of them now charge brands for the way out. That RANDOM Agency's read: audit your exits before you pay for more of them.

1. Meta One puts a price on links

On September 15, Meta launched Meta One, a subscription with plans for people, creators, and businesses. Business plans run from $14.99 to $499 a month, per profile. Clickable links in organic Instagram posts and Reels start at the $49.99 Advanced plan, capped at four posts and four Reels a month.

Two days later, Social Media Today reported that more Facebook pages are being capped at two link posts a month unless they subscribe. Meta first tested that cap in December 2025.

Who it matters for: everyone, and CPG brands sending shoppers to retailer pages most of all.

It hurts less than it sounds. The same report notes link posts fell from 9.8% of viewed Facebook content in 2022 to 1.3% in Meta's latest data. Link posts were already reaching almost nobody. Native posts still travel, though. On one CPG client's Facebook Page That RANDOM Agency manages, 89.5% of views from September 21 to October 18 came from people who don't follow the Page, and none of its posts were boosted.

This month: pull last quarter's link-click data for your Page and Instagram bio before anyone signs up for a plan.

2. TikTok moves checkout and creative approval into the app

At Advertising Week New York on October 5, TikTok announced Buy Direct, a one-click in-app checkout, and an AI Shopping Assistant. It also brought the TikTok Ad Network to US advertisers, extending campaigns to nearly 400,000 apps. A new Smart+ Creative Selection feature puts your own assets, AI-generated creative, and creator content into one approval workflow.

Who it matters for: CPG brands. B2B can skip most of this one.

This month: fix your product catalog. Agentic shopping tools pull from your feed, so missing images, vague titles, and wrong prices now cost you sales directly.

3. ChatGPT ads add sponsored agents and visual placements

On September 16, OpenAI began testing Sponsored Agents with select US advertisers. A user who clicks an ad can open a labeled chat with an agent that speaks for the business. The same release added ChatGPT Ads integrations for HubSpot and a ChatGPT Ads app for Shopify merchants.

On October 5, OpenAI announced a visual ad format that it said it would test during image generation, starting in late October in the US. It also expanded measurement partners and brand-suitability pilots.

Who it matters for: CPG brands on Shopify and B2B teams on HubSpot.

This month: if you're on either platform, run one small, capped test and judge it on new customers. Paid placement doesn't change what ChatGPT says on its own. That still comes from what the web says about you.

What changed on Instagram in September and October 2026?

Instagram gave brands more control over their grid and more editing tools in Edits. The biggest change, clickable post links, now costs money through Meta One.

  • Clickable links in organic posts and Reels, through Meta One Advanced and above (September 15)

    • Who it matters for: everyone

    • This month: decide based on last quarter’s link clicks

  • Edits adds audio links, reusable style Kits, and trending-topic insights for accounts over 10K followers (mid-October)

    • Who it matters for: teams producing Reels weekly

    • This month: save your brand’s visual style as a Kit

  • Instagram is removing the option to link Reels into a series (mid-October)

    • Who it matters for: anyone running a Reels series

    • This month: point viewers to the next episode in your caption or a pinned comment

What are the latest TikTok updates for brands?

TikTok spent the fall on comments and commerce. The comment updates matter to everyone. The commerce updates matter to CPG.

  • Voice comments, comment polls, and photo carousel comments, with voice rolling out to users 18 and older (September 3)

    • Who it matters for: everyone

    • This month: put a poll in the comments of your next post and let the results pick a future video

  • Buy Direct checkout and Shopping Assistant (October 5)

    • Who it matters for: CPG

    • This month: fix product titles, images, and prices in your catalog

  • TikTok Ad Network for US advertisers (October 5)

    • Who it matters for: CPG and B2B running awareness

    • This month: run it as its own line item so you can see what off-TikTok placements actually do

  • Smart+ Creative Selection (October 5)

    • Who it matters for: anyone running Smart+

    • This month: route creator content approvals through it instead of email

    • Who it matters for: CPG and B2B with a recurring format

    • Who it matters for: everyone

    • This month: rewrite your top descriptions so they answer the question a viewer would ask

What changed on Facebook and Meta ads?

Facebook's organic change is the link cap covered above. Most of Meta's other fall news came on the ad side.

  • More Pages capped at two organic link posts a month without Meta One (mid-September)

    • Who it matters for: everyone

    • This month: save your two links for the posts most likely to convert

  • Static-to-video generation in Advantage+ creative becomes generally available; Ads Creative Studio opens to more advertisers (October 6)

    • Who it matters for: everyone running Meta ads

    • This month: turn one strong static ad into video and test it against the original

What's new on Pinterest for brands?

Pinterest announced Visual Search Ads at Pinterest Presents on September 17. The format lets advertisers bid for placements in search results and Pin closeups. Pinterest said the beta would reach eligible advertisers in all its ad markets in the following weeks.

  • Visual Search Ads, built for lower-funnel goals and compatible with Performance+ (September 17)

    • Who it matters for: CPG, home, fashion

    • This month: ask your rep for beta access and audit your product imagery

  • Self-serve A/B testing inside Performance+ (September 17)

    • Who it matters for: anyone running Pinterest ads

    • This month: test one creative change before the holiday push

What changed on Threads?

Threads became easier to advertise on without Instagram. That's the most useful fall change for B2B brands whose Threads audience doesn't look like their Instagram audience.

  • Ads no longer need a matching Instagram account, and Threads gets its own business permissions (September)

    • Who it matters for: B2B

    • This month: give your Threads lead their own access and test a small campaign

  • Podcast tools: profile cards, transcripts, guest tags, and episode reminders (September 16)

    • Who it matters for: B2B brands with a podcast

    • This month: add the podcast card to your profile and post every episode

Which AI tool updates affect social media marketing?

Most of the AI news that matters for social this fall is about ads and paid tiers. ChatGPT ads are covered in the top three above.

  • Meta One Core and Premium bundles sell more Meta AI image and video generation (September 15)

    • Who it matters for: content teams using Meta AI

    • This month: check whether anyone on your team is already paying for it personally

  • Meta’s AI business assistant can now build campaigns, change targeting, and adjust budgets from a prompt (October 6)

    • Who it matters for: anyone running Meta ads

    • This month: keep a human approving every budget change

    • Who it matters for: everyone

    • This month: have your newest designer take it before Q1

What is That RANDOM Agency seeing in client accounts?

The clearest Facebook lift we saw this fall came from posting more often. On one CPG client's Facebook Page, we published 13 posts from September 21 to October 18, up from 7 in the 28 days before, and none were boosted. Total post views roughly doubled, from 4,467 to 9,273.

Spend only where your data shows people actually click. The pattern across every platform this fall is the same: the free version of each feed keeps the audience inside the app, and the paid version sells a door. That RANDOM Agency is a women-owned boutique marketing agency in metro Detroit, and that's the rule we hold every client's budget to.

Frequently asked questions about fall 2026 social media updates

What are the biggest social media updates this fall?

Meta One's paid link allowances and the wider Facebook link cap, TikTok's Buy Direct checkout and Shopping Assistant, and ChatGPT's Sponsored Agents and visual ad tests. All three move clicking and buying inside the platform. That RANDOM Agency recommends checking what your organic links actually drive before paying for more.

What changed on Instagram in October 2026?

Instagram's Edits app added audio links, reusable Kits and trending-topic insights for larger accounts. Clickable links in posts and Reels are now available through Meta One's paid business plans, which launched September 15. In September, Instagram also let users add tagged posts to their main grid.

Do brands have to pay to post links on Facebook and Instagram now?

Some do. More Facebook Pages are capped at two organic link posts a month unless they subscribe to Meta One. On Instagram, links inside posts and Reels start at the $49.99 Advanced plan. Because link posts already get very little reach, most brands lose less than they expect.

What are the latest TikTok updates for brands?

TikTok announced Buy Direct checkout, an AI Shopping Assistant, and US access to the TikTok Ad Network on October 5. In September, it added voice comments, comment polls, and photo carousel comments. CPG brands should prioritize the commerce tools. Everyone can use comment polls.
